This is the place where Matsuo Bashō, the author of travelogues such as “Nomadashi Kiko” and “Oku no Hosomichi” and many famous haiku poems, was mourned.
Basho left Edo in the middle of May, and went to Kyoto and Iga-Ueno, and entered Osaka in September, but soon after that he fell ill and died on October 12 at the age of 51.
A monument has been erected as the place of his death.
